The venue is believed to be a medieval castle overlooking a lake at Bracciano, some 40kms north of Rome – but nobody is confirming or denying the event.

Wedding-watchers have cautioned that if Cruise and his future bride go ahead with a Scientology ceremony, it likely won’t be recognized by the Italian state.

From George Clooney’s estate on Lake Como to Mussolini’s former residence on the Garda Lake, media speculation on where in Italy Hollywood’s most high-profile betrothed couple will tie the knot has only one consistent element: A lake.

Likely backdrops for the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who are set to marry in an undisclosed Italian location on November 18, have been floating for days, and now appear to have narrowed on the Odescalchi Castle on Lake Bracciano, near Rome.

The romantic, 15th-century castle – with its halls, gardens, and even a chapel nearby- can host up to 1,400 guests and has become the focus of the latest speculation

As international media started gathering in the quiet town today, local officials and residents remained tightlipped.

Patrizia Riccione, Bracciano Mayor, saying “I don’t know what kind of rite they will choose or what they want to do. I think it is unlikely it will have a legal value. In Italy, you need papers and procedures that we have not been informed of.’

Pensioner, Lucio, saying “We don’t care much about it, but we are happy because it will make money, and money is always useful”

Pensioner Maria Rosati, Bracciano resident, saying “It’s great for Bracciano, to give life back to this dead town.’

Elderly Woman, Bracciano resident said”I don’t care about the wedding and the stars. My husband looks like John Travolta”

“The only thing we have received in the past days is a request to clear the square in front of the castle,” Patrizia Riccioni said.

“It is a hint, not evidence,” she said with a smile.

Lake Bracciano is a lake of volcanic origin in the Italian region Lazio, 32 km NW of Rome. With a surface of 56.76 km² it is the second largest lake in the region (second only to Lake Bolsena) and one of the major lakes of Italy. It has a circular perimeter of approximately 32 km; its surface is 160 meters above sea level and its deepest point is 165 m.

The lake owes its origin to intense volcanic activity from 600,000 to 40,000 years before present, which created many small volcanoes in the Sabatino territory. The was situated under the present lake of Bracciano. The collapse of the main magma chamber created the caldera now occupied by the lake. Some small craters are still recognisable around the lake and in the immediate vicinity.

Three towns border the lake, Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano.

The lake is an important tourist attraction situated near Rome. As it serves as a drinking water reservoir for the town of Rome it has been since 1986 under control in order to avoid pollution of its waters. The use of motorboats is strictly forbidden (exceptions being made for a few professional fisherman and the authorities) and a centralised sewer system has been built for all the bordering towns in order to avoid any spoiling of the water quality. This makes Bracciano one of the cleanest lakes of Italy. The absence of motorized navigation favours sailing and canoeing.
