Tiger Claims 7th Consecutive Richest Sportsperson Crown

Despite revelations regarding his extramarital affairs and a significant drop in playing form, Tiger Woods has once again topped the list of richest sportspeople in the world. Wood’s dominance of the list stretches to an incredible seven consecutive years according to a leading US sports publication.

International, the 23rd of July 2010: US sports publication, Sports Illustrated, recently revealed that the world number one golfer had reported earnings of some US$90.5 million for 2009. That figure is some US$30 million ahead of second placed tennis ace Roger Federer who sits on a comparatively meagre US$62 million.

In a year in which, Wood’s extramarital affairs were unveiled and took center stage, he retained his earnings capacity, although the estimated total fell by 40% on his 2008 total of US$128.5 million. Woods’s earnings for the 2010 list are comprised of US$20.6m in earnings and US$70.4m in endorsements from such sponsors as Nike Inc and Electronic Arts Inc. Woods’s endorsement earnings fell US$22.1m from last year’s list.

Tennis star Roger Federer came in second on the list, merely thousands of dollars ahead of Wood’s closest competitors on the golf course and fellow American Phil Mickelson with earnings of US$61.8 million.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jnr. (US$60.5m) and basketballer LeBron James (US$45.9m) rounded out the top five, who have estimated combined earnings of over US$300 million for 2009.

Three footballers followed with World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi (US$44.1m) topping the trio ahead of David Beckham (US$40.6m) and Portuguese ace Cristiano Ronaldo (US$40.1m). Rounding out the top ten were boxer Manny Pacquiao (US$38m) in ninth and baseballers Alex Rodriguez and Ichiro Suzuki tied for tenth (US$37.1).
