Three Suspects Caught in Russian Robbery Case

Pattaya police have arrested 3 of the 4 Thai suspects who robbed 4 Russian tourists at Pratumnak Hill on January 4. The identity of the 4th suspect is known and police are tracking him down.

PATTAYA – January 5, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]: The announcement of the arrests of three supects who recently robbed two Russian couples was made by Pol. Maj. Gen. Katcha Panthusart Director of Chonburi provincial police; Pol. Col. Suphathee Boonkrong, vice commander of Chonburi provincial police; Pol. Col. Pisit Proyrungroj, vice director of Chonburi provincial police; and Pol. Col. Suwan Chiawnawinthawatch, director of Muang Pattaya police station.

The adult suspect was identified as Mr. Wanchai Tongdul, 37 years old, from Sriracha. Mr. Wanchai does not have a permanent job and is a scavenger who lives under the shade of a banyan tree in front of Nongor Temple on Pattaya Third Road.

The other two suspects are male teenagers, 15 and 16 years old. They could not be shown at the press conference because of their ages. The fourth suspect, who escaped capture, was identified as Mr. Atthapol Polyod, 34 years old, or Beer, living at the house number 222 moo1, Rabror, Tasae,Choomporn.

After his arrest, Mr. Wanchai initially denied taking part in the robbery. But he later confessed to police and described what happened. On the day of the robbery, he was collecting discarded object in the trash with the two teenagers, “Mr. Dam” (alias) and “Mr. Jeans” (alias).

Suddenly Mr. Atthapol came along and asked them to celebrate the New Year with him. So Mr. Wanchai hopped on the back of Mr. Attapol’s motorbike, a Yamaha Fino. Meanwhile, the two teen boys rode together on a Honda Wave motorbike.

While driving through Pratamnak Soi 5, the Thais saw two foreign couples who were walking. So Mr. Beer told them to stop their bikes. Mr. Dam used a fake gun to point at the two Russian ladies, Ms. Katerina Rojina and Ms. Diliana, while the other teen took their purses.

In their purses were 10,000 baht, 50 U.S. Dollars, and 3,000 Rubles. There was also a BlackBerry Curve, a Russian driving license, and a black Nikon camera worth 10,000 baht. Altogether the stolen property totalled 50,000 baht.

Police initially charged the four suspects with robbing other people’s properties, and then sent them to the detective officers to prosecute. As for the escaped suspect Mr. Atthapol, police will follow up and expect to arrest him soon.


More Russians Robbed By Gunmen In Pratumnak

Two Russian couples were robbed at gunpoint by four men riding two motorbikes near Pratumnak Hill. The Russians were eating and drinking near a footpath when the motorbikers robbed them and then drove away. The area is also where two Russian ladies were abducted and robbed and raped on Christmas Day. The suspects in that case have just been arrested.
