Police Sub-Lieutenant Noparut Na Rangsri, a sub-inspector from Sansook Police Station on duty on Bangsaen Beach, heard that the traffic police had questioned the four individuals, asking them directly if they were monks, which at first they denied. However, on being asked for addresses, the men gave a temple’s name in Bangna, Bangkok. They claimed that they had resigned from the monkhood, but the police, seeing the evidence on the back seat, were unconvinced and phoned the temple in question to verify their story, only to discover that the three still held high positions at the Bangna temple.

The monks, who were identified as Mr. Chonsuchart Jirapaiboob, 37, Mr. Prawat Gulayanukul, 28, Mr. Nattawut Sap-ooppatum, 37, being confronted with the truth, had no option but to confirm that they were indeed monks out on the town for a night of adventure in Bangsaen. The driver of the bronze Honda (no. 381 Bangkok plate) who had acted as the monks’ escort and guide, it transpired, didn’t have a licence and was duly charged. The monks, for their part, were returned to their temple, but not before the police had informed the head of the temple about their breaking discipline, and the head abbot promised to investigate further and punish them for their indiscretions.
