Thousands Attend Annual Pattaya Long Boat Race Festival

The weekend of the 22nd-23rd November has seen the arrival of the Annual Pattaya Long Boat Race Festival 2008 which takes place at the Mabprachan Reservior in Banglamung District, Chonburi.

The ceremony was kicked off on the 22nd by Mr. Sontaya Kunpluem, former minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr.Thanee Samatkit, Deputy Governor of Chonburi, Mr.Rewat Polluk-in, Deputy Chief Executive of Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization and Mr. Mai Chaiyanit, Mayor of Nongprue Municipality.

Participants in the completion are competing for the coveted Princess Sirindhorn and the Princess Soamsavali cups.

The atmosphere on the first day was lively with Mr. Sontaya presiding over the festival and joyfully watching the opening long boat race between the first two competitors. Another event was the Buffalo Racing, which is considered a symbol of Chonburi. The most interesting and fascinating activity for visitors was the Silver Boys taking the beautifully decorated buffaloes to the competitive ground. Many observers were also impressed by the rare and traditional Long Drum contest.

             The event, which also includes the International Boat Race with participants from Malaysia, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Singapore, is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors during the course of the weekend.
