THEY’RE MAD OVER CREDITORS’ STRONG ARM TACTICS AND TAKE GRIEVANCES TO POLICE

The head of the Consumer Rights Defence, Mr. Mr.Ithiboon An-Wongsa led a group of credit card and personal loan consumers in a bid to prosecute four financial services companies, including G.E. Capital (Thailand) Ltd., Krung Thai Bank, Quick Cash and the Nawarin Law Firm. They charged that the four companies libelled, threatened and menaced people who are in debt.

On 26 August 2007, at 10 AM Mr. Ithiboon led a contingent of over thirty people with credit woes to meet with Police Lieutenant Colonel Wiriya Sujarit, an Investigator, to lodge a complaint against the four financial companies, which have, allegedly, been using abusive tactics to gain payments. Examples of the strong-arm methods that the companies have allegedly utilized are: libel, threatening the consumers with abusive language and sending documents that appeared like court papers to their homes and workplaces. These documents implied that if the consumer didn’t pay up, his property would be seized.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Wiriya said that investigators are interviewing the complainants and will determine if there have been violations of criminal law. If criminal law has been violated, Police Lieutenant Colonel Wiriya thought that the aggrieved parties might do better by bringing their grievances to The Committee on Consumer Rights Defence, which might be better equipped to help them redress their complaints.

One of the consumers stressed that the creditors used abusive methods, including strong language, to press for payment. Those in debt felt as if they were being treated like criminals. The present poor economic conditions have caused an increase in missed payments among those who have accrued consumer debt. The consumers felt that the financial companies should cooperate with consumers, who are struggling to pay their debts, and work out easier repayment plans, rather than use coercion to gain repayment.
