The Tension Rises In The Iranian Hostage Crisis

As the British naval personnels’ detention by Iran went into its 12th day, responses from Britain and its major allies have been mixed ,with the British government ostensibly playing down the incident in the hope of a peaceful diplomatic solution, while the US publically ramps up the tension. Some sources have described Iran’s actions incident as piracy.

The British sangfroid, however, is superficial. Two more the televised “confessions of trespass into Iranian territorial waters by Lieutenant Felix Carman of the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Captain Chris Air has caused the British governmnet to react furiously.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office maintained, “It is unacceptable for these pictures to be shown.” The Foreign Secretary insisted that there had been no incursion into Iranian waters and demanded a “full explanation” for Iran’s actions. While Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, intensified the pressure by describing Iran’s action as “unjustified and wrong” and insisting that “the quicker the situation is resolved, the easier it will be for all of us”. Michael Moore, the Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman, described the broadcast as “crude and cynical propaganda”. Admiral Sir Alan West, former First Sea Lord said “It is a charade set up for internal show in Iran and other parts of the Arab world”.

The Americans have joined the fray with Preseident Bush stating “Iran must give back the hostages.” “They’re innocent, they did nothing wrong, and they were summarily plucked out of waters. The Inaians took this people out of Iraqi waters. It’s inexcusable behaviour.”

Tehran has so far refused to bow to pressure to free the captives, who are being held in a secret location.
