The Killing Place by Tess Gerritsen

This has all the ingredients of a good suspense, a bit of CSI forensic action and a great plot. The first chapter begins in Idaho with one of the American cults led by a charismatic figure that holds an entire congregation under his spell. It is vividly frightening and the way the feeling of abandonment is described in a foreign isolated place is jaw dropping.

Maura Isles attends a medical conference in Wyoming, when she stumbles across an old friend from college. After an unresolved romance, Maura decides to do something spontaneous and sets out for a weekend away in a snow cabin to indulge in some skiing and a catch up with these old acquaintances. However while en route to the cabin the snow is falling heavily and Maura and Isles becomes stranded in the small village of Kingdom Come.

The town is eerie with windows left open despite heavy snow, uneaten meals are set out on tables and there’s no one in sight.  What has happened of the residents of Kingdom Come?

Not able to contact Maura, Detective Jane Rizzoli begins to worry for her friends’ safety and sets off to find her, fearing the worst. What follows is tense and creepy with Gerritsen’s two leading ladies at the helm.  Read on for a totally engrossed read as the plot unfolds and the later chapters finally tie up with the first.

The author invites us to uncover the mysterious towns’ secret and what results is a truly unsettling read with a great twist at the end. This is the 8th book in this series but it could easily be read if you are new to this author. Well worth a try for a spooky escape on these long summer nights.
