The Dangers Of Online Trading – Unborn Baby Theft

A young American woman who apparently so wanted a new baby of her own that she cut one from the abdomen of a new friend is currently under investigation in Oregon, USA, facing murder charges.

The accused may be also charged with both the murder of the pregnant mother-to-be and that of the male baby if it was found to have been breathing before it subsequently died. She is currently being held under suicide watch in Washington County jail in Hillsboro. If convicted, she faces life imprisonment without parole.

Korena Roberts, 27, the accused, who already had two young children, met the pregnant mother-to-be, Heather Snively, 21, on line through a website called Craigslist, whilst trying to find clothes for a new baby, or for her. Roberts had apparently been in contact with “numerous” other pregnant women in the Portland city area on line. She had been maintaining to anyone who asked, including her live-in boyfriend that she, herself, was pregnant, with either a single child or twins, and was looking for baby clothes to buy on line when she came across Heather Snively, apparently a few weeks ago.
Heather was an avid Internet user who had frequently used the portal of Craigslist to sell clothes from. She was also described as somewhat naïve, but “She could make friends with anybody. She was a very trusting person,” according to Sandy Carson, a neighbour from Heather’s previous residence in Maryland.

The almost eight months gone, young mother-to-be, had apparently come to Oregon in the spring, following her boyfriend, Christopher Popp, the father of the baby boy, who was pursuing a job opportunity. Popp, later reported Heather Snively missing. Neighbours report having seen the two women together at Roberts’ house several times over the past two weeks, with Heather obviously pregnant.

The crime came to light when police in Washington County were called to Roberts’ home last week, responding to an emergency call reporting a baby in distress. What faced them was a tragedy reminiscent of Macbeth, particularly when she had threatened to rip her baby from the womb. The floor was apparently swimming in blood, with Roberts, an unidentified man, but apparently Robert’s boyfriend, vainly trying to revive a newly-dead, newborn child.

Roberts told authorities that she had just had the baby and was sent to the hospital, where doctors discovered no evidence of her having given birth in the recent past and simultaneously pronounced the baby boy dead. The young mother-to-be was later found murdered in a crawl space of Roberts’ suburban Hillsboro home by the police who returned immediately after delivering Roberts to the antenatal department. The medical examiner pronounced Heather Snively the victim of homicidal violence: “blunt force” causing head wounds and “sharp force” injuries to her stomach.

The crucial issue at present is whether the baby had breathed, even once, before it died. If so, Roberts will be charged with his murder too.

There are copycat elements to this murder, similar events having happened before. About this time last year, a Pennsylvania woman cut a baby from another’s woman’s body and tried to pass it off as her own.

In 2004, a Missouri woman strangled another woman and subsequently used a kitchen knife to cut a baby girl from her womb. She was arrested one day later after also trying to pass off the child as her own.

Ironically, Craigslist is also getting a reputation as a killing website.
