Pattaya, the 30th of April [Pattaya Daily News]: The much anticipated ‘Top of the Gulf Regatta’ commenced on Friday amidst a large gathering of yachting and sailing fanatics at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club on Jomtien Beach.

This year’s event sees the inclusion of both the Platu Coronation Cup and the Thailand Optimists Nationals into the event with over 200 boats and 600 participants competing in the multi-tiered yacht race.

This year’s fleet of keeled and multi-hull boats is reportedly the largest ever with the Chairman of the Organising Committee Mr. William Gasson stating, “This year the Regatta has grown about 25%. Approximately 50-60% of the participants are Thai with 40% being residents of Thailand and international sailors. There are more than 20 nationalities competing and many boats are chartered by international crews in the Platu class.”

In addition to the main attraction, the large 44ft vessels, this year’s competition will feature a number of smaller monohull dinghies, beach cruisers, catamarans, lasers and optimists all fighting it out for the top prize. Competing in the Thailand Optimist Nationals will be over 120 junior sailors from a number of countries along with the two young Thai World Champions, Miss Noppakao Poonpat and Mr. Keerati Bualong.

Considered a serious chance for the main honours is the Beneteau First 44.7ft ‘Ichi Ban,’ skippered by world champion sailor Matt Allan, who has participated in many of Thailand’s regatta’s over the years and is a consecutive winner of the Phuket King’s Cup. Outside of Asia, Allen is better known for his outstanding performance in the 2009 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Regatta in which he placed an admirable fourth skippering ‘Ichi ban’.

The 2010 ‘Top of the Gulf Regatta’ runs between the 30th of April and the 4th of May from the Ocean Marina Yacht Club located along Jomtien Beach.
