Thaksin to be Arrested if Caught in Thai Air Space

Deputy Thai Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Monday informed international airline companies that ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra will immediately be arrested if caught flying over Thai airspace.

Bangkok, the 16th of November 2009 [Pattaya Daily News]: The exiled former premier recently spent several days in Phnom Penh, shaking hands with Prime Minister Hun Sen and leading government officials.

Mr Shinawatra, during his stay in Cambodia announced that he had been appointed as an economic advisor to the Cambodian government and Prime Minister Hun Sen. These latest developments have further downgraded the relationship between the Thai and Cambodian governments, with both countries recalling their ambassadors within a day of the announced appointment.

Further to the recall of its ambassador to Thailand, Phnom Penh expelled Thai first secretary Mr Kamrod Palawatwichai from the Thai embassy on the 12th of November. After hearing of the latest Cambodian action the Thai government responded in kind by expelling the Cambodian first secretary in Bangkok the following day.

In a situation that is deteriorating everyday, the border crossing between Thailand and Cambodia remains open with border trade continuing as usual. There have been no reports by customs officers at the border of any negative relations between the two nationalities, at present.

Mr Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted from his position as Thai Premier after a military coup in 2006. The coup was formed due to intense corruption allegations form by his opposition. Mr Shinawatra fled the country in 2006 for the United Kingdom returning in 2008 to face corruption charges before later fleeing into exile again, he was subsequently convicted in absentia.
