Thaksin denies role in Bangkok bombings

BANGKOK, Jan 2 - Thailand‘s former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday repeatedly denied suggestions that he or his close aides were to blame for the series of New Year‘s Eve bomb explosions which rocked the capital, rebuking the post-coup government for being too quick to make a conclusion in the case.

The nine coordinated explosions that made Bangkok’s New Year’s Eve a night to remember, killed three and injured 38 persons, including nine foreigners in the first public violence to occur in the capital in decades.

“I swear that the thought of hurting any Thai people or destabilising the country for the sake of political benefit is not in my mind,” Mr. Thaksin said in a hand-written letter from Beijing dated Tuesday and released by his legal advisor in Bangkok.

The former premier said he condemned the perpetrators in the strongest terms, but expressed dissatisfaction that the government led by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont for jumping to the conclusion that the bombings were the work of politicians who lost power.

“Less than 24 hours after the bombings hit Bangkok, the government hastily concluded that politicians of the previous government were to blame, while it failed to find those who were behind the mounting casualties of daily violence in deep South,” the letter said.

Thaksin’s denial was in response to Prime Minister Surayud’s comments that the bombings were likely to be the work of “people who lost political benefits,” but he refused to name names or specify any particular group behind the deadly attacks. The former prime minister vowed to fight accusations to the end.

“I’m prepared to return to Thailand to acknowledge all of the charges laid against me as long as a fair trial is conducted,” the former Thai leader wrote from his exile in the Chinese capital.
