Thaksin confident of sister’s victory in Thai election

DUBAI, June 14 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Fugitive former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra expressed confidence Tuesday that the party of his younger sister Yingluck Shinawatra will win an "outright" majority in the July 3 general election in Thailand.

In an interview with Kyodo News at his luxury villa, Thaksin said Yingluck and her Pheu Thai Party would invite smaller parties to join a coalition government and embark on a reconciliation process that should include a dialogue with all political players such as military leaders.

“According to the polls conducted by government agencies and other independent institutions, most of them showed we will win an outright majority,” he said.

Initial polls conducted in all 375 constituencies showed convincing results, according to Thaksin.

He said the Pheu Thai Party has to work harder to reach voters in the lower north and some parts of central Thailand.

The party retains confidence in its strength in the country’s north and northeast and Bangkok’s suburbs.

When asked about possible coalition partners, Thaksin said, “It is too early to talk about that.” However, he said the Pheu Thai Party should look for many more small parties that have only one or two elected members of parliament to join the coalition.

He described current Thai politics as shaping toward only two major political parties.

An administration with one single party is not favorable in Thailand, he said, adding that he experienced it in 2004 and it was unsuccessful.

Thaksin expressed a wish that he could return to Thailand in November as he has two important schedules in mind — to attend the auspicious occasion on Dec. 5 when Thais celebrate the 84th birthday of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej and to attend his daughter’s wedding scheduled in mid-December.
