Bangkok, the 29th of July 2010: Thailand’s Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions has issued an arrest warrant for now fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The warrant was issued following his and/or his representatives non-appearance for court over falsified asset declarations.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) earlier filed its case with the Supreme Court after the February 26 ruling to seize over half the assets of the former prime minister and his family. In the court ruling magistrates stipulated that Mr. Thaksin and his now ex-wife had in fact concealed their declarable assets.

The NACC allege that Mr. Thaksin in turn falsified his financial statement/s, hiding assets in the names of his children and various other family members. The Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions subsequently agreed to proceed with the new matters filed by the NACC.

Following yesterdays hearing, in which neither Mr. Thaksin nor his representatives were present, a warrant was issued for his arrest. However, due to the extenuating circumstances, Mr. Thaksin is in self-imposed exile, the court ruled to temporarily suspend the case pending his return to the Kingdom.

A February 26 ruling stated that Mr. Thaksin and his former wife had abused his position of power in order to significantly enrich both their personal and business assets. The Thai Supreme Court subsequently seized some Bt46 billion of Mr. Thaksin’s personal fortune.
