Thailand Trying To Register Illegal Foreign Workers

BANGKOK, June 3 - In an attempt to legalise illegal foreign workers in Thailand, the government plans to offer them for the last opportunity to officially register and receive a temporary passport as well as work permit, Labour Minister Paitoon Kaewthong said on Tuesday.

Accompanied by Permanent Secretary for Labour Somchai Chumrat, the minister told a press conference that there are now 400,000-500,000 foreign workers who have registered already, and some 400,000 illegal workers in Thailand.

The last round of foreign labour registrations will expire on February 28, 2010. The Ministry of Labour will allow employers to enroll their foreign workers, giving them temporary passports and work permits for a maximum of two years, Mr. Paitoon said. The work permit could be renewed twice.

When the process is completed, the workers will be entitled to social insurance and cost of living benefits apart from their legal migrant status, Mr. Paitoon said.

Registration will begin after the Cabinet approves the plan and the Interior Ministry announces it. Foreign workers must then register within a month. (TNA)
