Of 44 countries studied by Euromonitor, Thais came fourth, drinking an average of 4.5 shots of liquor a week – that’s every man, woman and child.

But Thailand still has a long way to go to catch up with the real boozers in Korea, where the average person slugs down 13.7 shots a week.

In second place – but a surprisingly long way behind – is Russia, where the average person swallows 6.3 jigs a week. That’s less than half the intake of the world champions.

Third place honours go to near neighbours The Philippines, where people swallow an average of 5.4 shots a week. The others in the Top 10 are: Japan (4.4), Bulgaria and Ukraine (3.9), Slovakia (3.8), Brazil (3.6) and the USA (3.3).
