BANGKOK – April 8,2014; Social Development and Human Security Minister Paveena Hongsakul revealed that she had met with Ms Robina Patricia Marks, South African Ambassador to Thailand, on ways to prevent and eliminate the problem of human trafficking in both countries. She said the discussion was focused on future coordination between relevant agencies in Thailand and South Africa through the embassy in order to exchange information that could lead to a prompt arrest of culprits.

Ms Paveena added that related officials from Thailand would travel to South Africa in early June to meet with the South African government on this issue. The meeting will aim to draw up a bilateral agreement on human trafficking prevention and elimination.

The joint effort is coming on the heels of a recent incident, in which several Thai women were lured to South Africa for sex trade. Contacts were made with the Thai police, resulting in a successful rescue mission under the cooperation between the two countries.
