Thailand is tops, according to wotif.com

BANGKOK 22 January 2009: For the second year running, Thailand has topped the list of Asian regions in terms of bookings through popular accommodation website, Wotif.com.

Wotif Group Executive General Manager for Asia, Sii Eawsakul said despite the dramatic year, Thailand remained Wotif.com’s strongest performer in terms of bookings.

“Wotif.com bookers are attracted to great deals, and Thailand continues to be a value for money destination that is attractive for our bookers,” she added.

The top Asian regions in terms of the number of bookings received for stays during 2008 were mostly consistent from last year, with the exception of Indonesia moving up two spots to come in fifth place.

City destinations offer year-round appeal for business travellers and holidaymakers and the larger cities enticed the most bookers, with Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur taking the top four spots on the top Asian destinations list, consistent with last year.

“It is no surprise that big cities feature prominently on this list, however it is great to see three Thailand destinations feature, with Koh Samui appearing on the list for the first time.

“Thailand’s strength for tourism, lies in its diverse range of destinations and these results prove how popular Thailand is as a place to explore,” said Sii.

Within Thailand, Bangkok’s business and leisure appeal ensured it took the number one position for bookings through Wotif.com, followed closely by Phuket and Koh Samui.

 Thailand’s appeal should remain strong with Asian travellers in 2009 with the results of Wotif.com’s survey, with over 750 responses, showing it as the fourth most popular on Asian’s travel wish list for 2009.

Malaysia was the most popular region, closely followed by Hong Kong and Japan.
