Rain poured down for most of the match making the pitch almost waterlogged. That made it difficult for either side to play decent football and also kept the attendance down. Thailand lined up with strikers Teerathep Winothai and Teerasil Dangda while Singapore-based player Therdsak Chaiman was on the bench for the game.

Thailand almost went ahead in the seventh minute when Suree Sukha crossed from the right and the ball rolled across the goal but no one was on hand to tap it in.In the 22nd minute, Syria’s Hamzeh Al Aitouni almost scored an own goal when his attempted clearance hit the bar.Thailand should have gone ahead shortly after when they were awarded a penalty after Datsakorn Thonglao was fouled in the area. However, Teerathep Winothai scuffed his spot kick and it was saved by Mosab Balhous.

Syria went ahead in the 35th minute through a penalty when Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool was harshly adjudged to have fouled Abmad Deeb while jumping for the ball after a corner kick. Raja Rafe Abmad made no mistake from the spot.

After the break Thailand put on the pressure in search of an equaliser. They came close on several occasions before Teerathep made amends for his penalty miss by nodding the ball home from close range after a good cross from the left by Natthaphong Samana. Thailand dominated the remainder of the proceedings but the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle.

Thailand’s coach Bryan Robson said he was pleased with his team’s performance. “We came back well and controlled the second half and were unlucky not to win,” he said.Robson said he was pleased with the performance of veteran Therdsak, who came off the bench, and Datsakorn Thonglao who dominated the midfield. He admitted his team had still had to work on scoring goals as they were missing good chances.

Thailand will play the Asian Cup qualifier in Singapore on November 14 and in Bangkok on November 18.
