Minister of Public Health Witthaya Kaewparadai told a press conference that the 50-year-old Thai man returned from the United States on May 25 and developed the flu-like symptoms on May 26.

The victim received medical treatment at a Bangkok hospital on Friday and the victim’s clinical samples tested positive for influenza A, H1N1 both in lab tests conducted by Siriraj Hospital and the Department of Medical Sciences, he said.

The patient has now fully recovered and his five family members are also receiving the anti-viral drug, Oseltamivir to prevent the spread of the disease, Dr. Witthaya said.

The detection of the new H1N1 case resulted from the cooperation of persons travelling back from other countries and hospitals, so that Thailand’s preventive measures against the H1N1 virus are effective.

Thailand has six suspected flu cases currently under medical surveillance.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Type A influenza has killed nearly a hundred persons and infected over 15,500 persons in 53 countries, since it emerged in North America in late April. (TNA)
