Thailand Among Countries Most At Risk From Rising Sea Levels

The International Institution for the Environment and Development (IIED) has pinpointed Thailand as being among 10 countries currently most at risk from natural disasters, including cyclones and rising sea levels, as a result of world climate change.

Ten countries were declared to be within the natural disaster danger zone which would be most affected because of the percentage of the population living in coastal areas. Eight Asian countries, including Thailand, Bangladesh China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan were most at risk according to the IIED. The US and Egypt are also vulnerable.

With projections of rising sea levels by tens of centimetres before the end of the 21st century, up to 16.4 million Thais currently live in vulnerable coastal areas on the Gulf of Thailand, which could well be be pummelled by severe storms, flooding and intense tropical cyclones. The provinces most at risk are Bangkok, Chanthaburi Nakhon Pathom Pathum Thani, Pattani, Samut Prakan, and Samut Songkram. However, the threat was not confined merely to these provinces, twenty other provinces could also be at risk, but less so.

IIED maintained that local populations in the countries potentially affected were not taking the threat as seriously as they might, however. Ten percent of the global population, approximately 634 million people, still continue to live in the threatened areas.

Asia has already suffered a disproportionate number of casualties from flooding. The IIED maintained that between the years1994 and 2004, 33% of the flood disasters occurred in Asia with 60,000 fatalities and almost two million people affected. The IIED were among those voices raised to encourage world governments to limit the effects of climate change, make urban areas less vulnerable and aid coastal populations to move to safer habitation
