Thailand, the 29th of August 2010: Ford and Mazda’s investment in Thailand under the AAT group, a 50/50 joint venture, is set to increase with the announcement of a further Bt10 billion capital investment in the development of the production plant in Rayong.

The venture is aimed at equipping the facility, specialising in the production and export of popular model pickups to over 130 markets, to support developments of the next generation of vehicles by mid-2011.

The respective companies revealed that the investment would support necessary upgrades to the facility in Rayong and subsequent supplier tooling. The injection of funds will inherently boost the pairs joint investment in Thailand to nearly Bt58 billion.

“The new investment marks another important step forward in AAT’s development as a manufacturing hub,” said Toshinori Kusuhashi, the president of AutoAlliance Thailand.

Through the continued strengthening of the Thai transport and export industries, Mr. Kusuhashi revealed that AAT had been able to build “world-class pickups and cars,” with this new investment expected to “enable us (AAT) to continue to enhance the one-ton pickup’s reputation as product champion of Thailand’s automotive industry.”

President of Ford Motor Company’s Asia-Pacific operations stated, “This new investment in AAT reinforces Ford Motor Company’s long-term commitment to Thailand as a strategic manufacturing base for our global operations. The new production line … will raise the bar in flexibility, efficiency, quality and environmentally friendly production at AAT.”

At present, since its opening in 2009, the Rayong AAT plant has specifically been producing both the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta models for sale in Thailand and export to other ASEAN nations. In 2007, AAT celebrated one million units of production since its original inception in 1998.
