Cape Town, the 30th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Following the raid on a suspected illegal brothel in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, police successfully rescued 21 Thai nationals believed to have been smuggled into the country to work in the sex trade industry. Police confiscated 21 Thai passports, belonging to the women, and a small amount of cash and heroin in their search of the premises.

Paul Ramaloko, spokesman from the HAWKS specialised crime-fighting unit, stated; “We suspect that they may be victims of human trafficking. We really couldn’t establish whether they are victims of trafficking or not so what we have done is we have removed them to a place of safety and then we are just going to conduct some interviews with them.”

Acting on a tipoff from an unknown source on Saturday morning, the specialised police unit raided the suspected brothel finding the 21 Thai woman and 2 South Africans inside the premises. The women are all between the age 23-27 and have allegedly been in South Africa for less than one month.

One of the South African suspects, believed to have been a woman, has been charged with operating an illegal brothel, whilst the other suspect has since been released without charge.

South Africa’s security and police force have been steadily increased over the past 6-months due to the impending commencement of the international spectacle that is the FIFA World Cup. Anti-trafficking measures have been increased whilst a draft law has been proposed to the South African parliament in relation to the regulation of illegal trafficking and smuggling.
