Thai Woman Caught With Endangered Loris Monkey In Pattaya

A Thai woman was caught with an endangered Loris monkey in Pattaya after tourists reported her to the police.

PATTAYA – February 19,2015 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 00.10 am Pol.Lt.Col.Pawatchai Sudsakorn-deputy superintendent of Pattaya police station- was accompanied with a patrol team to arrest a Ms Narumon Insaard aged 34 in front of Central Pattaya Beach with an Loris monkey.

 

Police officers were notified by tourists that someone had a Loris monkey which are endangered and it was being used to gain money from tourists who paid money to have their photo taken with it.

Upon questioning her she claimed that she charged 100 baht for foreigners to have their photo taken with it and she had bought the monkey from her friend. The police officers then took her to the police station in order to be questioned further and to prosecute her. The officials then sent the monkey to Bang Lamung wildlife centre.

 

Loris monkeys are protected under the CITES. In addition Loris monkeys are popular on the black market for people who want them as pets. The monkey has its teeth taken out before becoming a pet.
