BANGKOK – Muang Thong United (MTU) took a step closer to to winning their first-ever the 2009 Thai Premier League Champion on Wednesday 7 , Oct 09 after defeating TTM Samut Sakhon 2-0 on the same night closest challengers Chonburi were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Chula United.

With two matches to go, the Kirins are three points ahead of Chonburi FC who were held to a 2-2 home draw against relegation strugglers Chula United.

MTU went one up in the 14th minute through a Pichitphong Choeichiu free-kick before Dagno Siaka sealed the big-spending Bangkok side’s 17th win of the season with a 66th minute penalty.

Meanwhile, Chonburi lost ground on the champions elect , when the beaten AFC Cup 2008 quarter-finalists could only manage a point at home to Chula.

The Shark started well enough when a long-range effort from Mohamed Kone gave them an 11th minute lead but Chula restored parity ten minutes later through Brazilian striker Aron Da Silva.

The Sharks regained the lead through a trademark finish from free-kick specialist , Arthit Sunthornpit , a minute from the interval restored the home team’s lead but Chonburi’s schedule of five matches in two weeks, which included the second-leg of the AFC Cup against Binh Duong in Vietnam, may have taken its toll on Kiatisuk Senamuang’s side as Kittipoom Paphunga leveled in the 65th minute to earn Chula a share of the spoils.

The draw took Chonburi’s points tally to 56, three less than MTU, but with last season’s Division One champions having a better head-to-head record than Chonburi, MTU can seal the title with a victory over Osotspa in their next match.

In the other matches, defending champions Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) drew 2-2 with Samut Songkhram in Ayutthaya.

Suriya Domthaisong scored for PEA after 29 minutes but the visitors hit back with goals from Santiparb Siri (49) and Lappe Jean Roger (64).

However, the champions secured a point thanks to a Krissana Wongbutdee strike.

At Thai-Japan stadium, Bangkok United lost 1-0 to Navy-Rayong with Wuthichai Arsucheewa on target in the 62nd minute.

Nakhon Pathom FC suffered a 3-1 home defeat against fellow relegation contenders Sri Racha.
