BANGKOK – February 11, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; The launch of a new smartphone application will help the police better serve both Thais and foreign tourists, officials said at a press conference. Making the announcement were Pol. Lt. Gen. Pongpat Chayapan, commissioner of the Central Investigation Center; along with Mr. Anuparp Raksakarn, acting director general of the tourism department of the Tourism and Sports Ministry; and Pol. Maj. Gen. Roy Inkapairot, the director of the Tourist Police.

“Tourism and Sports” is an application for smartphones to service tourists more quickly with modern technology. Pol. Maj. Gen. Roy Inkapairot said the applications can be used by both foreign tourists and Thai residents.

To load the application, the person must register his name, phone number and passport number, which will be entered in the police data base. The personal information will be kept strictly confidential. When an emergency arises, the police can use the information from the caller’s application to track the coordinates and send e-mails notifying the local tourist police officers immediately.

The tourist police director said when a tourist wants help from police, he would call 1155 on the application, and inform them of his coordinates by punching the “send location” button. The police would then instantly know who was making the call and his location. This application will help make police response faster in all situations.

The application will also contain emergency numbers, and up-to-date warnings of any specific crime activity in the area, to alert tourists not to become victims of current scams or crimes.

The police commander said that the “Tourist Buddy” application will contain useful information for tourists, such as the locations of tourist police stations in the entire country, along with phone numbers.

The tourists can also use the application to inform them of current or upcoming tourism activities or festivals, along with promotions of restaurants, hotels and many more tourist attractions, including questionnaires. Future plans include creating new smartphone applications in different languages such as Chinese and Russian, since they are frequent visitors to Thailand.

Mr. Anuparp said that the application will be very useful for tourists, and is in keeping with other services such as the free Wi-Fi offered in the tourist areas as part of the policy of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The new smartphone application would be a real-time application that could be connected to CCTV cameras, and will continue to be developed further to improve its capabilities.
