I would like to assure you all the government would enforce soft measures in handling with the situation and state officials would not hurt the people. The government cannot afford to let the situation escalate into a full-blown war, said Mr. Abhisit.

In his televised address to the nation Monday night after meeting with security agencies, the prime minister stressed the government would be able to handle the situation without the need to enforce special laws.

The security agencies, he said, agreed to protect key public buildings and a combined force of police and soldiers as well as local officials would act to prevent confrontation and avoid possible clashes.

He also warned legal action would be taken against anyone found violating the law or threatening national security. Earlier on Monday, core leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) said they expected as many as 300,000 people would join its three-day mass rally in Bangkok, starting this Wednesday April 8.

Jatuporn Prompan said the protesters would march peacefully to the residence of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda, but would not break into his house. He also warned the government not to mobilise demonstators to counter the red-shirted UDD rally.

Do not bring in a pro-government mass rally, otherwise it will lead to bloodshed. We hope we will win in three days.

The UDD or Red Shirts, loyal to convicted, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, have demonstrated against the Abhisit government at Government House since March 26,vowing to topple a government they describe as being of and for ?aristocrats.-(TNA)
