Mr. Somchai said that the trip was his first visit to the southernmost provinces since he had taken office in September.

The prime minister said he had no special agenda for the visit so he let the local officials prepare his itinerary.

During the visit, Mr. Somchai said, he expected to inspect and follow up implementation of government policy to develop the three southern border provinces that were still hit by the insurgency’s violent attacks.

Changes or the initiation of new policy in the southern border provinces should be discussed among the army chief, the police and the local authorities, he said.

The prime minister added that the government was also paying close attention to the problems in the southern region as the local population there contiunues to suffer from the violence and needs the help of the government to return the region to a peaceful region. (TNA)
