Thai Nationals Indicted in California for Ivory Smuggling

Two Thai nationals have been indicted in California on Tuesday after being accused of conspiring to smuggle ivory from endangered African elephant in the United States from Thailand.

California, the 20th of January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The indictment accuse the two men of conspiracy, illegally offering to sell endangered species, illegal importation of wildlife, entry of goods by false statement and smuggling of wildlife. As a result of the indictment both men are now being accused of violating the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora & Fauna. Consequently the US and Thailand are both registered signatories of this agreement.

 

The Justice Department released a statement explaining; Mr. Moun Chau [50] had purchased ivory from a Bangkok-based Thai national Mr. Samart Chokchoyma who had offered it for sale on the international auction website “eBay.” According to the indictment Mr. Chau had purchased ivory on several other occasions following, in one case claiming on an official customs declaration that the shipment of ivory was in fact a gift containing children’s toys.

If convicted, Mr. Chau will face up to 25 years in federal prison, and Samart could be sentenced to as much as 53 years in prison, the justice department said. Mr. Chau will be summoned to appear for arraignment in Los Angeles next month. Samart was arrested in November by Thai authorities.
