Nakorn Sawan, the 1st of July 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 10:00am on Thursday, Captain Jukkrit Sangpoung (Nakorn Sawan Police Investigator) was notified of the death of a six-year-old girl in the village of Ladyao. Allegedly, the girl had committed suicide whilst “play-acting” with her twin brother.

At the scene, the grieving family of the deceased girl, now known as Nong Tan, confronted officers whilst a crowd of neighbours had gathering round to pay their respects. In a state of shock the young girl’s twin brother, Nong Tor, showed police where the incident took place, a 3-meter high tree in front of the family home.

Reportedly, whilst playing outside after school the twins had decided to re-enact a young girls hanging, which they had witnessed on the television recently. Nong Tan promptly tied a piece of string to the tree branch before climbing onto a chair to re-enact the scene. Nong Tor explained to police that his sister had told him to remove the chair and that he thought she was only playing when she was struggling.

Allegedly, Nong Tor informed his grandma that Nong Tan was in trouble once his sister had stopped to struggle and hung lifeless from the rope. The young girl was reportedly rushed to a local hospital in a coma, later dying at 3:00am on Friday.

Local residents of the village explained to the media that the local children liked to watch the Thai movie “Sai Sok” in which there is a scene where a young woman hangs herself from a tree. Youth psychiatrist Dr. Pankamol Lor Trakul confirmed that it was extremely likely for the six-year-old children to copy such acts that they view on television shows or movies. Dr. Trakul explained that the Media Control Department need to properly maintain the standards and reduce the graphic and negative imagery shown to children.

Mrs. Ladda Tung Suparchai (Secretary of Thailand Ministry of Culture) stated that the Media Control Department has censorship categories that they had to abide by and that proper administration of these gradings needed to be adhered to vigilantly. She further stated that legal punishment and definitions of the law in this area is unclear and needs to be addressed following this most tragic incident.

One elderly villager, Mr. Hing Piluk [72] explained that the twins had not been given a fake wedding ceremony to ward away bad luck; a traditional Thai belief is that the twins will be forced to live apart or one will die should they not have a fake wedding ceremony. He stated that the family had waited too long to stage the wedding which resulted in this tragic accident.
