Bangkok, the 27th of April 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The King, making his first public statement since the start of the Red Shirts protests on March 14th, appeared on national television network so that the newly appointed Supreme Court judges could take their oath in front of the monarch, a customary procedure before they begin their duties.

During the address, King Bhumibol requested the judges, “do your [their] job with honesty. In this country there may be some people who forget their duty. You should be an example by working honestly and properly, your job is very important.” This statement is believed to be a reference to the ongoing political turmoil that is afflicting the nation in which he also stated, “[by doing this] it will show there are officials in the country who perform their duties with a strong and clear will and are determined to maintain stability in the country. This will give people the determination to perform their own duties, as well.”

Although not referring to the protracted political crisis directly, King Bhumibol’s statements are definitely directed towards the situation. Whilst accusing neither side of being in the right or wrong, it is clear that he believes the situation in general as it now stands is a result of various people and officials failing to ‘do their job.’

In signs that the King’s statement will have an evocative effect on certain sections of  the Thai officialdom, joint forces of soldiers and police managed to forcefully disperse a Red-Shirt gathering that had been blocking the south-bound lanes of traffic on the Phaholyothin Road into the capital.

His Majesty the King gave a similar speech to Supreme Court judges in February 2010, where he asked them to perform their jobs with professionalism, honesty and integrity. That particular address came days before the Supreme Court was due to announce the ruling on the Bt46 billion asset seizure from fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
