The initial report was received by Police Colonel Wariya Wariwong of the Pattaya police who subsequently dispatched a police and rescue team to the 3 storey building located at 157/132-133, Pattaya-Naklua road, Moo. 5, Nongprue Banglamung. The building has a bar named Racuda on the ground floor and rooms for rent on the second and third floors.

In a room on the second floor police found the dead body of a woman hanging from a ceiling fan by a white scarf. She was wearing a grey long sleeved shirt and panties, and was later identified as Miss. Piyamas Bookala, [27] , residing at 10 Moo. 13 , Nacheuk, Bangtalad, Kalasin

Police found no wounds or injuries on her body. It was estimated she had been dead for about 2 hours. The room was in disarray and the safety box was opened.

The body was discovered by Mrs. Em Goong Glangdon, [50] who was a cleaner at the building. She told police that the woman had been living in the room with Mr. Jonathan Cronin [26], an Irish national since 29th April 2009.

Mrs. Em said on the 9th May, at around 10.00 am, she spotted Miss Piyamas walking downstairs in a drunken state but she didn’t pay any special attention to her. Later on the same day, when she went to Miss Piyamas’s room, she found her body was hanging from the ceiling fan. Mr. Cronin was not in the room at the time.

Mr. Jumlong Kulsiri [43], a motorbike taxi driver, told police three days before he had taken Miss Piyamas and Mr. Cronin to the Crocodile Farm. On the day the incident occurred, he also took Mr. Cronin to the “ Pattaya Sauna” in the morning and again at 10.00 am. He took him to the Big-C shopping mall on North Pattaya road. Police noted all the details and searched for Mr. Cronin.

After a short period, Mr. Cronin arrived at the room. Police checked his body and found wounds on the left of his head and around his left ear. He told police he was attacked by Miss Piyamas and had to go and sleep at another place.

Police Lieutenant Cololonel Chonnapat, the Deputy Superintendent, said Mr. Cronin denied any connection with Miss. Piyamas ’s death.

Other witnesses had informed the police that Mr. Cronin had taken another bar girl to the room with them sometimes [ with Miss Piyamas in the same room]. Mr. Cronin was taken to the police station for further investigation to find out if he was involved in Miss. Piyamas ’s death or whether she committed suicide.
