Pramont Sutheewong, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand said after meeting with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva that he was satisfied with the overall cabinet line up, except for the Industry and Commerce ministers.

It was expected the post of industry minister would be taken by Ranongruk Suwanchawee of the Puea Pandin party, while commerce minister would go to Pornthiwa Nakasai from the Phum Jai Thai party, who are both heavily criticised as lacking expertise in the proposed jobs.

Mr. Pramon urged the Democrat-led coalition government to review its decision as the country was facing a severe economic crisis.

He added it was important the government assign the positions to professionals fit for the task to avoid damaging the country?s economy.

However, Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) c hairman Santi Vilassakdanon said he understood the difficulty of the forming of coalition government that comprised various political parties as the ministers had to be given to the coalition parties.

He said if the ministers had no experiences in the field he or she supervised, advisers could be appointed to help and give recommendations.

Mr. Santi added that if the ministers had problems related to images, but when the prime minister announced his strong intention to lead the economic team himself, he could set the policy and could run the economic ministry in the same direction.

The government should be given time, three to four months, he said, to work and prove its ability.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva conceded that there were limitations in cabinet portfolio appointment.

“We accept criticism. But we need to find balance in cabinet portfolios so that the country can move forward. I’ve contacted many people to work as advisors and asked the ministers-to-be to choose the right people to build up confidence,” said the premier.

Meanwhile, Wittaya Buranasiri, a core leader of the opposition Puea Thai Party, lashed out at the Democrat’s cabinet line-up, saying it was compiled to serve the personal concerns rather than the nation’s benefit, particularly giving important portfolios to the group loyal to Newin Chidchob — leader of a group of northeastern MPs who beceme ‘turncoats’ to support the Democrats in forming a new government, He said the so-call “Newin’s Friend Group” received a top-ranked minister positng particularly for Chavarat Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister, from Somchai government, who is tipped to become interior minister in the Democrat-led government because of the unidentified deal between the group and the Democrat Party.

Mr. Wittaya also urged the public to focus on the Minister of Foreign Affairs post that was expected to go to Kasit Bhiromya who was actively involved in the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) which staged protests against Mr. Somchai’s government. (TNA)
