Thai Airways Makes Emergency Landing in Bangkok

A Thai Airways Boeing 747-400 fully loaded with passengers had to make an emergency landing shortly after take-off from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Bangkok, the 3rd of February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Thai Airways Flight 116 took off from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 5:15pm with 313 passengers aboard heading for Chiang Mai. Approximately 5 minutes into the flight a severe engine fire forced the pilot to return to Bangkok making an emergency landing. The fire was extinguished mid-air, however following procedures the pilots returned to the airport.

 

Fortunately, all passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the flight without incident. Thai Airways management used a replacement 747-400 to fly the passengers to Chiang Mai. The second jumbo took-off from Bangkok at 6:08pm merely 20 minutes after the emergency landing.

The Thai Airways Chairman stated that all pre-flight maintenance procedures were carried out, however; a rigorous investigation will be launched to find the cause of the fire. Furthermore, he praised the pilots for their decisive action and adherence to emergency procedures.
