Pattaya, 6 November 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: a German national, Ms Helmut Stoll [49] was sitting near the Dolphin Roundabout with her husband when a three-man teenage gang of opportunist thieves swooped on them and attempted to wrest the woman’s gold necklace with a diamond pendant from around her neck. In the struggle which followed, the necklace broke and fell to the ground, at which point the gang made their escape up North Pattaya Road, empty handed.

Notifying the police, the couple waited in situ a shocked condition. Shortly after, a police response team led by Pol.Capt. Netithorn Rattanasuchanun,Pattaya Police Deputy Chief Inspector, arrived, quickly took details of the attack and went in pursuit of the gang. The gang on two motorcycles was tracked down to Soi Sa-ing, between Pothisarn Road and North Pattaya Road and police attempted to block their exit. The ringleader crashed his blue Honda Wave motorcycle in his eagerness to escape, but the others managed to flee the scene.

Suspect, Jirayut Sirawatcharaphol [20], was arrested and taken into custody at Pattaya Police Station. During his interrogation, Jirayut confessed that the trio made a practice of prowling tourist areas on the lookout for likely victims to rob to support their yah-bah(methamphetamine) habit.

Having seen the two Germans, Jirayut recounted, the gang stopped and while his companions stood on watch, Jirayut approached his intended victims directly and attempted to snatch Ms Helmut’s necklace, but when it disintegrated, they all fled. Jirayut was found to have a criminal record and had only recently been released from jail, imprisoned for similar offences. He also confessed to two recent successful snatch and grabs. While Jirayut remains in custody awaiting trial, charged with attempted theft, his two accomplices are being hunted by police.
