Bangkok, the 11th of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The high school student, who has subsequently been released without charge in psychological care, was apparently stressed with his workload at the school having only recently moved from the Northeast of Thailand with his mother.

Police Colonel Chetta Sangsrikaew stated that the recent publicity of the Bangkok protests on television coupled with the boys own stress and educational issues may have prompted him to set fire to the Mahidol Wittayanusorn School in Nakhon Pathom. “He has been watching too much news,” police Col. Chetta.

Mahidol Wittayanusorn is one of a few specialized science high schools in Thailand, where students can start their medical degree right out of high school. The boarding school is closely associated with Mahidol University, home to one of the best medical schools in the country.

The boy is allegedly from the Northeast of Thailand and was having difficulty integrating and adjusting to the more demanding and competitive study environment that is offered at the school. He had told administrators and various faculty members that he had wanted to go home but his mother had refused to let him.

The student had allegedly hid in a nearby building to the school before breaking in, covering the floor with gasoline and setting it ablaze. The fire was able to spread quickly being fuelled by the school books it reached the upper floors within minutes. The damage caused to the school is estimated at US$4 million.
