Teacher Arrested for Stealing Over 40 Notebook

A young female teacher who was addicted to the lottery and gambling stole over 40 notebook computers from her school to be pawned to pay for he addiction and to pay off her debts. When questioned by the police she tried to commit suicide.

BANGKOK – March 8, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; at Bang Khun Thian police station, Pol.Col. Chotiwat Lueangwilai (Superintendent of Bang Khun Thian police station), Pol.Lt.Col. Kraiwit Unhakongtraiphop (Deputy Superintendent), Pol.Lt. Saichol Songdech (Deputy Inspector) and the detective police team together made a statement about the arrest of Miss Sodsai Charpradit, aged 28, address 182, Rim Khlong Darn road, Bang Khor Sub-district, Jom Thong District, who is a teacher at Level 3 at Wat Absornsawan girls school. She was arrested with the exhibits of 5 Dell notebook computers, model Vostro and 39 pawn tickets in her room Wat Absornsawan girls school, Pak Khlong Phasi Charoen Sub-district, Phasi Charoen District.

Pol.Lt.Col. Kraiwit revealed that in the morning of March 8, 2014 the executive of the school notified the detection division of Bang Khun Thien police station that the officers of the Auditor General of Thailand (OAG) had come to inspect the notebook computers which belong to the government which the school was using as teaching aids.

But the auditors found that over 40 notebook computers were missing. The school executive was suspicious that Miss Sodsai (the defendant), who is the teacher of multimedia division and responsible for the storage of the notebooks might be involved in the missing notebook computers. Therefore, Pol.Col. Chotiwat commanded forces of the police team to inspect the school and called Miss Sodsai to be questioned. During the questioning Miss Sodsai got so stressed that she ran into the toilet where she tried to drink bathroom cleaner in order to commit suicide. Some teacher could see and heard what was going on so they rushed to perform first aid on her before she was rushed to hospital for further treatment where she survived.

Upon questioning Miss Sodsai, she confessed that she stole the notebook computers and pawned them in pawn shops in areas of Jom Thong and Bang Pa Kaew . She also said that she had first started stealing them in 2012 in order to get money for illegal lottery debts. She told police that she could get 3,000 – 8,000 THB for each notebook computer and at the end of the month she would redeem them from the pawn shop and return to them back to school.

But lately she could not make enough money so she stole over 40 notebook computers to be pawned but it was at the time when the officers of the Auditor General of Thailand came to inspect the condition of all the notebook computers which belongs to the government. Initially, the officers charged her with the allegation of theft and acting corruptly (dishonestly). She was then sent to the investigation officer who put her in jail at Thonburi Criminal Court in order to prosecute her according to the Thai law.
