TAT Host 8th Bi-annual Thailand Tourism Awards

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will host the 8th edition of the Thailand Tourism Awards 2010 today. Organised to coincide with World Tourism Day the awards spectacular is designed to promote and sustain international standards in the Thai tourism industry.

Thailand, the 27th of September 2010: This years awards, marking the 50th anniversary of the TAT, will be evaluated by a panel of more than 300 nominees from five regions of Thailand.

Started in 1996 and held bi-annually, the TAT awards are aimed at motivating both private and public tourism-related organisations to conserve the nations natural and cultural resources, as well as promote sustainable tourism development.

The awards aim to:

– Encourage competition in the tourism industry prompting a push for higher standards of management, service quality and marketing strategies.

– Promote TAT’s intent to promote quality tourism development and gain global recognition for the awards.

– Recognise industry entrepreneurs for their contributions to the tourism sector of Thailand’s economy.

– Help award winners with boosting their business profile and international credibility through marketing efforts.

Awards will be split into five sections and categorised into 20 groups; tourist attractions, tourist accommodation, tour programmes, tourism development and promotion organisation and health tourism.

1. Tourist attractions
1.1 Natural attractions:

  • Northern region – Chiang Mai, Kamphaeng Phet
  • Central region – Phetchburi
  • Southern region – Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Narathiwat
  • Northeast region – Sakon Nakhon, Loei
  • Eastern region – Chanthaburi

1.2 Historical and cultural attractions:

  • Northern region – Lampang
  • Central region – Ratchaburi
  • Southern region – not available
  • Northeast region – Udon Thani
  • Eastern region – Chonburi

1.3 Community attractions:

  • Northern region – Mae Hong Son
  • Central region – Samut Songkhram, Samut Prakan
  • Southern region – Phuket
  • Northeast region – Mukdahan
  • Eastern region – Trat

1.4 Ecotourism:

  • Northern region – Petchabun
  • Central region – Prachuap Khiri Khan
  • Southern region – Ranong

1.5 Agrotourism:

  • Northern region – Sukhothai, Chiang Rai
  • Central region – Phetchaburi, Samut Songkhram
  • Southern region – Chumphon
  • Northeast region – Nakhon Ratchasima, Amnat Charoen
  • Eastern region – Rayong

1.6 Recreation:

  • Education
  • Entertainment
  • Adventure

2. Tourist accommodation
2.1 City hotels over 80 rooms:

  • Central region – Bangkok
  • Southern region – Songkhla
  • Northeast region – Nakhon Ratchasima
  • Eastern region – Chonburi

2.2 Provincial hotels over 80 rooms:

  • Southern region – Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phuket, Krabi
  • Provincial hotels less than 80 rooms :
  • Northern region – Chiang Rai,
  • Central region – Samut Songkhram
  • Southern region – Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani

2.3 Pool-villas:

  • Southern region : Surat Thani

2.4 Boutique hotels

  • Northern region : Chiang Mai

2.5 MICE hotels:

  • Central region – Uthai Thani
