Swine Flu Renamed As Novel Flu Virus

As the swine flu virus alert level was ramped up to Level 5, yesterday, April 30, 2009, by the World Health Authority (WHO), one below pandemic level, the European Union has just announced the virus? name change to ?Novel Flu Virus?. The WHO, on the other hand, has announced it will begin referring to the virus as Influenza A (H1N1) to pacify apparently outraged pork industry producers. A good sign is that new cases are declining in Mexico.

Certain countries are apparently still labouring under the misapprehension that infected pork is a major carrier of the virus. In actuality, the virus is a much more dangerous airborne variety. Speculation is still rife as to what the genetic makeup of the Novel Flu Virus actually is, as the virus seemingly spreads inexorably across the world, with 13 countries now affected, a further 17 countries checking possible cases, and 159 conformed and 4295 suspected cases, overall.

The WHO and flu experts maintain that they do not yet know enough about the new strain to predict how deadly it is, how far it might spread and how long any potential pandemic may last. The journal Eurosurveillance has just published the first detailed analysis, indicating the flu is a mixture related to two known swine viruses, one itself a triple mixture of bird, human and swine viruses.?

A number of ameliorating factors are beginning to emerge about the voracity of the virus, however. Firstly, the Mexican Health authorities have declared the number of new cases is declining, in addition only 12 out of 176 deaths supposedly due to the H1N1 swine flu virus have been confirmed as being actually the result of swine flu, although Health Minister, Jose Angel Cordova, predicted “The number of confirmed fatalities will probably rise”. Another encouraging factor is that almost all the infections outside of Mexico have been mild and only a few patients have required hospital treatment. Only one person has died outside Mexico — a baby from Mexico who was visiting the United States
