Swine Flu Outbreak won’t Affect Thai Economy, Says Fti

BANGKOK, April 28 The outbreak of swine flu in Mexico will not impact the Thai economy, but may fare well for Thailand's food exports, according to Federation of Thai Industry (FTI) chairman Santi Vilassakdanont.

He said the influenza outbreak in Mexico would not affect Thailand’s exports. In contrast, it would benefit the food industry as exporters could position their products in the countries where imports of meats from the flu-hit destinations are banned.

The FTI chief said should Thailand be able to publicise and inform the public regarding ways to control the influenza efficiently, such as by warning prospective travellers to travel to influenza outbreak-affected countries and medical screening of travellers coming from at-risk countries.

“Thailand has experience in preventing and coping with the bird influenza outbreak. Should it be well-prepared, we are confident it will not affect the tourism,” he said.

Mr. Santi said many economic agencies around the world shared a view that the global economy had already bottomed out.

This could be witnessed by a gradual increase in purchase orders for electronic products, improved production capacity of electronics producers, and an easing of layoffs, he added. (TNA)
