Susan Boyle: Scottish Sining Sensation

When she came on stage at the UK TV talent contest show, “Britain’s Got Talent”, you could have been forgiven for assuming that the 47-year-old Scottish lady, Susan Boyle, was about to be made the brunt of the audience’s scorn and cynicism. But how wrong you would have been!

It’s rare to see the ultra-popular show’s judges, Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden, anything but stoical and cynical, dismissing failed wannabees with the casual buzz of the button, but this dowdily dressed, frankly retarded-looking Scottish housewife left the panel completely awestruck and flabbergasted as soon as she opened her mouth to sing. Susan literally has the voice of an angel, with perfect pitch, phrasing and breath control to put a top opera prima donna to shame.

Yet, when she appeared on stage, not one member of the audience, let alone the judges, could have remotely guessed from her nervous and faltering introduction that this mediocre-looking lady from an obscure West Lothian village, would have a voice with such range and timbre. She announced that her dream was to be like Elaine Page and that the reason she hadn’t been successful as yet was because she hadn’t had the chance. Well, she will certainly have that break now in the nationwide talent contest where the winner will be able to perform before Prince Charles at the prestigious Royal Variety Show, collect a cheque for £100,000, and launch themselves towards superstardom. She is up against stiff competition, though, but maybe her age will swing the judges in her favour as the talent contest unfolds over the next few weeks. We wish her all the luck, she certainly deserves it with such a golden voice.

But even if she doesn’t win the Britain’s Got Talent contest, her future is assured, her fame has already swept across the globe to wow audiences worldwide. Perhaps the most significant lesson to be learnt from Susan’s performance is that you most definitely can’t judge a book by its cover, she shatters every popular stereotype and preconception and moreover shows how an ordinary looking individual can truly hide her light behind a bushel.

As for her reception in Thailand, all you karaoke singers out there, this is what a song should actually sound like, so listen well and copy it to the note. Then, maybe, just maybe, the kwais will be silenced and the golden songbirds revealed. There’s always hope as Susan Boyle has categorically demonstrated
