BANGKOK, March 3,2013; MR Sukhumbhand expressed his appreciation to his supporters after winning Sunday’s Bangkok gubernatorial election, receiving the highest votes in the history of Bangkok governor poll. The previous record of 1.01 million votes was held by Samak Sundaravej in 2000.

The total votes for MR Sukhumbhand were 1,256,231, followed by his rival Pol. Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen, who has received 1,077,899 votes. Third and fourth places went to Pol. Gen. Sereepisuth Temeeyaves and Suharit Siamwalla, who were independent candidates, receiving 166,582 and 78,825 votes, respectively.

After his victory, MR Sukhumbhand thanked Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and promised to continue working with the government.

The re-elected governor also invited those who did not cast their votes to help him bring Bangkok forward.

MR Sukhumbhand also urged the Election Commission to investigate the exit polls as they earlier gave Pol. Gen. Pongsapat a victory over him. He said such results could create confusion and mislead Bangkokians.

Meanwhile, approximately 64 percent of Bangkokians have turned up to cast their votes. The latest voter turnout is slightly higher than the 60% projection of the Election Commission.
