Students Hooked On Teachers’ Homemade Video

Two teachers at a Nakorn Sawan school have sparked the interest of students by creating an educational video movie in cyberspace, “The Dragon Mask and the Sun,” an entertaining moral fable. Plans are in the works to complete a sixth and final installment of the video movie.

The video is a collaborative project involving two teachers, said Mrs. Nasamon Leejinda, the director of Wat Jomkirinakprot municipal school, Amphur Muang Nakorn Sawan, Nakorn Sawan province. The teachers had requested funds from the school budget, after they got the idea of making a video clip as an instructional media.

The Thai hero and leading actor in the video is a school computer teacher, Mr. Montri Namhad. He was talked into the role by art teacher Mr. Suthat Samorcheau, who had the original idea for the video.

The Thai hero portrayed in the movie is intended to be an inspiration for students to do the good things in society, and to want to be good citizens with good morals and willing to help other people, he said. The video also includes other educational subjects and themes. The leading actor Mr. Montri said that he feels so proud when his teacher friends call him after seeing the video clip to tell him how much they like it, and to ask for details.

“For making the clip, we did as a team work, of which there were many students and teachers who assisted in every step and delegated work according to each one’s ability,” Mr. Montri said. “There were good opportunities for the students who joined the work to use the skills they had.”

But due to other work demands by the teachers, there are only five completed parts of the clip, with the sixth and final part yet to finish. Mr. Montri has to work as the ONET tutor to the students, so he didn’t have time to do the 6th part. But he has roughly thought about completing the plot of the story.

Arts teacher Mr. Suthat, who originally conceived of the project, said that he feels so glad that more people are interested in hero cartoons nowadays. At first he want to make a short movie in order to help illustrate art concepts for his students who were studying paper mache and making masks. But then he got idea that he should make short movie that is useful to society, so he persuaded the computer teacher Mr. Montri to be the leading actor.

The first clip included some students, and they encountered some problems in the raw first effort. “But in the next clip we added dubbed sound, and increased the numbers of performers and singers, and also added effects in light, sound, color and laser,” Mr. Suthat said. The making the movie in Nakorn Sawan province is also important, because it introduces their province as a tourism destination, added.

Mr. Suthat described the plot of the video. “The Dragon Mask and The Sun is the story of the hero who will fight against the devil to help students,” he said. “At the beginning there will be the sounds of the flute and Thai musical instruments, and then the hero will eat Moji bread to change his appearance to be ready to fight against the devils.”

He added, “The plot of the story is meant to look like the Japanese hero cartoon.” For the 6th installment of the video movie, Mr. Suthat has already thought about the plot of story, which will have an educational emphasis, specifically on learning colors. So a future segment will be based on the name of “Ngoranger,” which consists of Ngored, Ngoyellow, etc., to teach students to be able to distinguish colors and learn the vocabulary, he said.

A plot twist will have the devil eat the alphabet, and when alphabet disappears, students will have no books to read and will not have knowledge. But the hero will emerge to get rid of devil that ate the alphabet, which aims to teach students to see the importance of reading.

However, Mr. Suthat will use his school vacation time to complete his movie, in order not to interfere with his student instructional time. “It takes a long time in making each part of the movie, because we use only ordinary video camera in making the film,” he said.
