Spain, the 19th of September 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Spain’s Honda rider Pedrosa recovered from a poor start to gain ground on the former champion Australian Ducati rider during the middle stages of the race, however ultimately lost out by an impressive five-second margin.

The 2007 champion Stoner, starting from pole having recovery from a morning crash, pulled away for the win after dominating proceedings from the start. Stoner’s team mate Nicky Hayden pipped championship leader Jorge Lorenzo for third, just over nine seconds off the pace.

Only five races remain of the 2010 MotoGP season, with 25 points awarded for a race victory only Pedrosa can now catch Lorenzo in the overall standings, the Yamaha rider leading his compatriot by 56 points. Stoner is in third, 129 point behind.

“It was a difficult race today and I was very nervous for the first few laps after the crash this morning,” Stoner said in an interview with Spanish television. “I was lucky not to make too big a mistake and tried to put in some smooth, consistent laps and pull away for the win,” the 24-year-old added.

Reigning champion Valentino Rossi, struggling with a persistent shoulder injury of late, finished in sixth.

Meanwhile, prior to the start of the race riders gathered in the paddock to pay tribute to Shoya Tomizawa, who died in a tragic accident at the San Marino Grand Prix a little over two weeks ago.

Members of his Moto2 team placed his bike on the starting grid and a minute’s silence was held for the 19-year-old, whose number 48 has been retired from the championship. Andrea Iannone of Italy won the Moto2 race and Spaniard Pol Espargaro was victorious in the 125cc category.
