Sticky Fingered Cambodian Lifts Dutch Man’s Wallet

An alert beach concessionaire noticed a Dutch tourist being pickpocketed on the beach, so she shouted for help. The thief was chased and caught by passersby in a nearby hotel parking lot. He was a Cambodian selling pocket lighters.

PATTAYA – July 29, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 3 p.m., a citizen reported to Pol. Capt. Somchai Chaikananukul and the vice suppression officers of Muang Pattaya police station Chonburi that he and other people had caught a thief in the parking lot of Sandalay Hotel at soi 2 near Beach Road, North Pattaya, moo 9, Nongprue, Banglamung.

Police went to check the scene and found several people detaining the suspect, Mr. Nueng, a Cambodian. He was captured with a grey wallet containing 13,700 baht and documents belonging to Mr. Martin Eckhardt, 47, a Dutch tourist who identified the thief.

Police talked to a witness, Mrs. Duenrung Pramkhao, 39, who owns a concession of beach chair and umbrella rentals. She said that Mr. Martin had been sitting to admire the Pattaya sea view when Mr. Nueng came to pester him to buy a lighter. She said Mr. Nueng appears to be a gay man.

Mr. Martin refused the sales pitch. However, when Mr. Martin was not paying attention, she saw Mr.Nueng take his wallet. So she shouted for help to catch the thief, who was caught by passersby at the hotel parking lot.

After questioning Mr. Nueng, the police wrote on the daily record for evidence. They informed Mr. Nueng of the accusations against him before sending him to the police investigation team.
