Spain Reign Supreme as European & World Champions

A dramatic late goal ensured Spain won the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Billed as a potential goal bonanza, the match itself was a little bit of a disappointment although the Spaniards deserved the victory, their fourth one goal win of this year’s tournament.

South Africa, the 11th of July 2010: The match, played in front of 85,000 fans and watched by an estimated 700 million, failed to live up to the pre-match hype and was littered with cards. English referee Howard Webb was forced into action having issued 5 of 12 yellow cards within the first 30-minutes. One red card was also issued to Holland’s John Heitinga late on.

The one and only goal of the match can in the 116th minute after scores remained deadlocked and the game progressed into extra-time. Barcelona midfielders Andres Iniesta was the Spanish hero delivering the killer ball on the end of a Cesc Fabregas pass.

Although both sides had been hailed for playing the game as it should be played throughout the tournament, and considering the two teams were at full strength for the final, an exciting and entertaining match did not ensue. Scoring opportunities were few and far between with the Spaniards making sporadic forays up the field only to be neutralised by a stifling Dutch defence.

Despite the match not living up to expectations, most agree that Spain were the deserved winners, triumphing in their first attempt at a World Cup final. They become just the third team to hold both European and World Cup titles at the same time.
