PATTAYA – October 14, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 1:55 p.m., a report of a tourist using a gun to shoot himself in the head was received by Pol. Sub. Lt. Puthiphong Cheunchom, investigation officer on duty, Pattaya police station. He rushed to inspect the scene with Pol. Lt. Col. Anake Sathongyu, inspector; the detective police team and doctors from Pattaya Memorial hospital.

The incident occurred in a shooting range at Pattaya Beach road between soi 7 and soi 8, address 246/2 Pattaya Beach road (about 200 meters from the Pattaya police station), moo 9, Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province.

When police reached the scene, a lot of Thais and foreigners had gathered outside to watch. Inside the shop, police found the injured man lying in a pool of blood and breathing softly. He was identified as Mr. Jonathan Osborn Koch, age 43, nationality South African.

The victim had a gunshot wound at his right temple caused by a 9 mm gun. Staff employees were standing by the victim and didn’t consent to allow the reporters or anyone to enter the shop. The staff forbade the reporters to take photographs. They also closed the mirrored front door to shield against the curious onlookers outside. Only the police were allowed inside.

Emergency doctors tended to the critically injured man and rushed him to Pattaya Memorial hospital, but he died shortly after arrival. Police questioned staff employees about the incident. They told police that Mr. Jonathan had come to practice shooting a firearm, and had chosen the 9 mm handgun, which the staff prepared for him.

But while employees were standing right beside him, Mr. Jonathan pointed the gun at his right temple and shot himself, and he fell to the floor. The shocked employees hurried to notify the police and Pattaya Memorial hospital to assist the victim.

The staff told police that Mr. Jonathan had clearly intended to shoot himself, and it was not due to the gun accidentally firing. However, police still didn’t conclude that suicide was the exact cause of death. They seized the gun used by the victim for evidence, and continued to investigate staff members. They will also inspect the CCTV footage again in detail.

This is the second suicide by gunshot occurring at the shooting range within the past year. In a similar manner, another foreign tourist had deliberately shot himself and died.
