It is with great pleasure that PDN presents a new series of articles based on the stories behind some of the most famous, and infamous, hit songs of the last 50 years.

The author, Tony Burton, has kindly given us permission to reproduce his stories as featured in his popular book “SongStories” (2001) together with some of his more recent works. It is the first time these stories have been published online.

Tony Burton has spent more than 30 years in the music business as a deejay, broadcaster, journalist and songwriter, but most importantly simply as a fan of popular contemporary music. In SongStories he shares his vast knowledge of the world of popular music, revealing the stories behind the songs we hear on our radios every day, and the artists and writers who made them famous.

To continue our introduction to this excellent series we hand you over to the author himself:

“SongStories” is for music fans like myself who are curious for a little more detail about the hit songs of the past century. What was the inspiration behind the song? How did it come to be recorded? Why is one song a huge hit, and another not? Where did all the money go? The answers to these questions, and many more, can be found within these tales. I’ve tried, to the best of my ability, to avoid the negative aspects of artists, and their careers, although at the same time I’ve endeavoured to explain some of the strange workings of the music business generally. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time checking and cross checking the facts in SongStories, though it has to be said that the music business thrives on anecdotes that aren’t necessarily the whole truth – so where such accounts should perhaps be taken with a pinch of salt, I have so alluded.

Most of the information within SongStories has been acquired from my own general knowledge, record cover and label-reading and magazines and books ingested over the past 45 years too numerous to mention. Many direct quotes are taken from my own personal interviews with the artists concerned, otherwise I have endeavoured to give credit to the original source.

These stories could not have been written without the contribution of all those wonderfully creative people who wrote and recorded the songs. Many are still with us – many have gone to join that great orchestra in the sky – but the gift that they gave us lives on, and will be remembered and enjoyed by generations to come.

To conclude, in the words of John Miles from his 1976 hit “Music” – “Music was my first love, and it will be my last.” That’s how it’s been for me, and I couldn’t live without my daily dose of music either. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of reading these stories as I got out of researching and writing them.
