Pattaya 31st July 2010 [England] Ian Huntley who was convicted in 2002 for the callous murder of two ten year olds is to sue the prison service for their failure in their duty of care towards him, but the Ministry of Justice said the claim would be “vigorously defended.”

Huntley who was a caretaker at the school of his young victims, had his throat slashed in March at the Frankland Prison in County Durham, but was not life threatening.

Jack Straw, the then Justice Secretary said that the government had absolutely no intention of paying compensation to 36 year old Huntley. During a Commons question time, it came to light that if Huntley’s claim is successful, he could be awarded up to £20,000 for negligence.

While at Wakefield Prison in 2005, Huntley was scalded with boiling water. He was moved to HMP Frankland in 2008, a Category A high security men’s prison. Since his conviction in December 2003, it is believed Huntley had tried committing suicide on three occasions through drug overdoses.

Huntley enticed his young victims into his home before killing them and hiding their bodies. He was convicted along with his girlfriend Maxine Carr who was a teaching assistant at the same school who was charged for perverting the course of justice. She has since been given a new identity on her release from prison.
