BANGKOK, Feb 3 - Embattled Social Development and Human Security Minister Witoon Nambutr announced his resignation on Tuesday, becoming the first figure in the month-old Democrat-led coalition government to bow out.

Speaking to a media conference at Government House, Mr. Witoon said he made the decision with immediate effect from his own perspective on political and social responsibility without any pressure from within the Democrat Party.

“There has been no pressure from any party executives. I’ve made the decision on my own for the benefit of the party so that the prime minister would be able to steer the country forward,” said the outgoing minister.

Mr. Witoon, a Democrat MP for the Ubon Rachathani province constituency in the northeast, has been on a political hot seat after the rotten canned fish controversy became an issue recently. The canned goods were among relief supplies distributed to flood victims in the South, with the recipients crying foul after they suffered food poisoning.

The opposition Puea Thai Party accused Mr. Witoon of involvement in irregularities surrounding the purchase of the spoiled fish.

Mr. Witoon dismissed the accusation, however, saying he was willing to cooperate and would accept any result of the probe into the issue to prove his innocence. (TNA)
